Football legends returned to the pitch for a star-studded charity football match in Malaysia, as part of the 2014 Laureus World Sports Awards. The Laureus All Stars Unity Cup was held at the Royal Selangor Club in Kuala Lumpur.
Italian football manager Fabio Capello and retired Danish footballer Michael Laudrup fielded the two teams, featuring world-class footballers Ronald de Boer, Quinton Fortune, Paulo Ferreira, Gaizka Mendieta, Luis Milla and Michel Salgado, Hidetoshi Nakata and Jari Litmanen.
Before kickoff, a moment of silence was observed for the families and loved ones of the victims the lost Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. Playing together with local youth players, it was a close fight between the two teams, but in the end Team Laureus took home a 8-6 victory against Team YR1M.
The match was also attended by Khairy Jamaluddin, the Sports Minister of Malaysia, and Dr Edwin Moses, the Chairman of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Laureus and Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia (YR1M) jointly announced an innovative partnership to benefit young people in Malaysia through the use of sport.
