FRIENDLY: AUSTRALIA 2 - NEW ZEALAND 1

Australia secured bragging rights over neighbours New Zealand with a 2-1 victory in a pre-World Cup friendly for both nations at the MCG Stadium. The Socceroos were widely expected to run out comfortable winners over the Kiwis, who will be competing in only their second finals next month, but a host of injuries made matters much more competitive than first thought.

Despite the 'friendly' nature of the fixture, the notoriously competitive streak of the Australians came to the fore in a lacklustre display by the home side that saw them earn three yellow cards, including a horror tackle by Blackburn's Vince Grella that should have seen him instantly dismissed. Substitute Brett Holman grabbed the winner in the dying seconds to give the Socceroos a victory that, on the whole, was undeserved after the visitors played some enterprising attacking football.
