ATM MOVED TO TOP OF GROUP A

MALAYSIA CUP: SELANGOR 2 - ATM 3

ATM captured an important 3-2 win over Selangor at the Shah Alam Stadium last night. The win rectified their disastrous Malaysia Cup opener against Sime Darby last Tuesday, and rejuvenates their Malaysia Cup hopes. The result also sent Selangor to the bottom of group A.

B.Satiananthan's men had more composure in a fair share of possession. Skipper Hairuddin Omar played attacking midfielder role to allow Marlon Alex James to continue pressuring Selangor defence. The tactical was fruitful as Hairuddin found the net in the 14th minutes after a penalty box scramble.

The Red Giants responded with an equaliser in the 29th minute after Amri Yahyah slid a Solihin Kanasian cross through Farizal's legs. However, the Gladiators added a second right before the break when Fitri Omar converted a pass from Marlon and Norazlan watched helplessly.

ATM was not satisfied with the narrow lead and made it 3-1 in the 46th minutes as Christie Jayaseelan headed in Fitri's cross. The desperate home side raised their game and pressed ATM to the end. Selangor could only get a consolation from Kunanlan in stoppage time as Forces held on for the important win.

PAHANG DEFEATS NEGERI SEMBILAN IN PAROI

MALAYSIA CUP: NEGERI SEMBILAN 3 - PAHANG 5
Negeri Sembilan started the match against Pahang in a very positive mood after winning over Terengganu in the opening match of the current Malaysia Cup campaign. However, they were shocked by Pahang's 5-3 win at their own ground last night.

The visitor took the lead in 23rd minutes from Azamuddin Mohd Akil, and the score remained until the break.

Negeri Sembilan started the second half in style when S.Sivanesan scored the equaliser from Fabio's pass in the 48th minute. However, their game faded after that with Pahang added 3 more goals through R.Gopinathan (51st and 66th minute) and Matias Ruben Conti (62nd minute).

Sivanesan tried to raise Negeri Sembilan's spirit by completing a hattrick in the 76th minute, but his team defenders were not up to his amazing form. It was so frustrating when Pahang added another goal in the 82nd minute through Amirulhadi Zainal to end any fighting spirit left within the Negeri Sembilan team.

JDT LOSS TO PKNS

MALAYSIA CUP: PKNS 2 - JOHOR DT 0

Patrick Ronaldinho was the hero in PKNS FC's win over Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) at Shah Alam Stadium last night. The Liberian born player scored a brace to silent the star studded Southern Tigers.

It was a great start for Abdul Rahman Ibrahim squad in the 2013 Malaysia Cup campaign. Ronaldinho opened the scoring in the 19th minutes. The goal shocked JDT and they started to attack on PKNS goal. However, the defenders were in great form denying JDT for an equaliser. The first half ended with PKNS leading with a 1 goal advantage.

JDT started the second half with more determinations. While launching continuous attacks for the equaliser, PKNS upset JDT again with Ronaldinho's second goal in the 58th minute. The desperation continued when JDT goalkeeper was shown the yellow card for handling the ball outside his penalty bow. Despite being backed by the travelling fans, JDT have to accept another unnecessary loss when the referee blew the final whistle.

UNITED WINS ON SEASON OPENING DAY

It's a winning Premier League start for David Moyes as Manchester United cruising to a comfortable opening day victory at Swansea City. Football pundits, writers and other club fans may question about new man at the helm but they may have forgotten that this is Manchester United.

Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck scored twice to ensure Moyes' reign started with a win. Braces from van Persie and Welbeck sent The Red Devils go top of the Premier League with an impressive 4-1 win at Swansea City. One of van Persie's goals is already good enough to be a contender for goal of year.

Van Persie's contribution was sublime, hooking in the opener before smashing home a 20-yard effort 17 minutes from time, before Wilfried Bony netted a consolation.

Unsettled Wayne Rooney made a 30-minute appearance as a substitute and was greeted warmly by United's travelling support despite his unrest at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney claimed the  assist for the Dutchman's second.

RVP DOUBLE FIRES MAN UNITED TO A GREAT START

Robin van Persie salvaged Manchester United's pre-season difficulties by delivering the goals that brought David Moyes his first silverware as manager. The Dutchman struck early in each half to allow The Red Devils to repel the threat of an adventurous Wigan and claim the Community Shield for the 20th time. Most importantly, it is the first trophy for Moyes, who is having such a huge responsibility after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson in May.

The man who scored 30 goals in his first season at Old trafford took only six minutes to get started with a superbly directing header that put United on the way to winning this trophy for a 20th time. His second arrived just before the hour, Van Persie instinctively cut inside and although it took a deflection off Perch to beat Carson, as the shot was on target, it meant last season's Golden Boot winner claimed a double, and Moyes claimed the trophy.

After all the unsettled Wayne Rooney's saga, the unforgiving transfer market and the unsure about the new management, there are some reassurances for all the Manchester United fans, that Robin van Persie is back at what he's good at – scoring goals and winning football matches.

MARLON TOPS MSL GOALSCORER LIST

Although his efforts couldn't lift his team to a better position than a 6th place finishing, Marlon Alex James finished top of the 2013 Malaysia Super League goalscoring charts. PKNS's Patrick Ronaldinho was just 2 goals shy of Marlon's 16 goals triumph, and Selangor's Forkey Doe has to be satisfied with just 10 goals in an injury hit season.

PERAK TRIUMPH WITH AWAY WIN

There were nothing much to play for in this last match. ATM looking to avoid lower than fourth in Malaysian Super League, and Perak trying to climb up to seventh. In front of 2000 odd fans, ATM failed to take the advantage of playing at their home ground.

The Gladiators started the match with many missed chances. They had quite a number of opportunities against the unsettled Perak defence. However, after all the missed chances, both team completed the first half without any goal.

As the second half started, Perak seem to be more organized. Goal keeper Farizal Marlias played a marvellous game to deny the ATM attacks.

Perak finally broke the deadlock in the 75th minute. Paulo Rangel was brought down by ATM Affize Mamat while chasing a through pass. The ATM defender was then sent off by the referee for the foul. As the freekick was taken, another ATM player in the wall blocked the attempt with a hand, and a penalty was given. Rangel converted with ease.

The match ended 1-0 to the visitors, and the loss sees ATM slipping to fifth, a far cry from their best ever position in the league; they were second place just a month ago. Whereas for Perak, this win and PKNS' loss to Pahang meant that they end this year's league in eighth.

BRAZIL TAME SPAIN TO CLINCH CONFEDERATIONS CUP

An incredible Maracana atmosphere spurred Brazil to their third consecutive Confederations Cup, with a brilliant 3-0 win against World Cup holders Spain. Fred grabbed a brace and Neymar scored yet another brilliant goal.

Sergio Ramos missed a penalty with his side three down and Gerard Pique then saw red with around 20 minutes remaining. The Maracana celebrated the win with gusto, and the host nation will be hoping that Thiago Silva will lift another iconic trophy in this stadium in just over 12 months' time.

THE RED WARRIORS WIN FA CUP

Kelantan silenced their critics as they bounced back from poor form in the Super League to retain the FA Cup by edging Darul Takzim 1-0. They showed that money alone cannot buy success as they tamed big spenders at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil tonight.

Mohd Norfarhan Mohd's solitary strike in the 15th minute was enough for The Red Warriors to clinch victory. Captain Badhri Radzi was the toast of Kelantan as the midfielder's pin-point passes and great vision led to his side's win and a spot in the AFC Cup next season.

As for Darul Takzim, the Johor side were hardly a threat as their strikers and midfielders failed to gel throughout the match. The energetic Kelantan side were all over the ineffective JDT side from the whistle and should have netted at least three goals in the first half.

JDT got off on the wrong footing right from the start and it was no surprise that coach Fandi Ahmad made all three substitutions in the first half. National striker Mohd Safee Sali, who was barely in the game was the first to leave as early in the 18th minute due to hamstring problem.

Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) progressed to the Malaysia FA Cup Final after winning a tightly fought match over Pahang tonight. Pahang 2 - Johor Darul Takzim 1 (Agg: 2-2) – JDT won on away goal rules. The win set them up to a mouth-watering clash against Kelantan.

Pahang came out fighting like a winner, wanting to make up for lost time after Tuesday's postponement. A double by Mathias Conti gave Pahang the advantage. However an away goal from Andrezinho destroyed everything.

With the score line 2-1 at the National Stadium Bukit Jalil , Pahang struggled to overcome the deficit. Pahang came back with a fight and had a few chances but all of them fail to make an impact until the referee blew the final whistle.

BAYERN WINS FIFTH CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

It was a magical night when Arjen Robben's 89th-minute winner took the European Champions League trophy to Munich for the fifth time after previous final disappointments in 2010 and 2012.

Bayern Munich started with seven players from last year's final line up against Chelsea. The game had started at breakneck speed and there was no let-up as play swung from end to end in the blink of an eye, with opportunities coming thick and fast. With two minutes remaining, Ribery backheeled the ball through for Robben, who took the ball away from Neven Subotc, shaped to go around Weidenfeller, and then squeezed the ball to the goalkeeper's left, a marvelously neat and inventive finish.

It was a story of redemption for Robben and his team. The player had suffered disappointments in the past three years, the three defeats in finals, two with Bayern and one with the Netherlands in the 2010 World Cup final.
