RVP DOUBLE FIRES MAN UNITED TO A GREAT START

Robin van Persie salvaged Manchester United's pre-season difficulties by delivering the goals that brought David Moyes his first silverware as manager. The Dutchman struck early in each half to allow The Red Devils to repel the threat of an adventurous Wigan and claim the Community Shield for the 20th time. Most importantly, it is the first trophy for Moyes, who is having such a huge responsibility after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson in May.

The man who scored 30 goals in his first season at Old trafford took only six minutes to get started with a superbly directing header that put United on the way to winning this trophy for a 20th time. His second arrived just before the hour, Van Persie instinctively cut inside and although it took a deflection off Perch to beat Carson, as the shot was on target, it meant last season's Golden Boot winner claimed a double, and Moyes claimed the trophy.

After all the unsettled Wayne Rooney's saga, the unforgiving transfer market and the unsure about the new management, there are some reassurances for all the Manchester United fans, that Robin van Persie is back at what he's good at – scoring goals and winning football matches.
